Fundamental Aspects of Search Console 

Search Console is a free tool developed by Google which is earlier known as Webmaster tools. It is a communication tool between Google and user. When we index a webpage, search console helps the Google to list the page. Also, provide us the detailed report on the performance, website fixes, malware attacks and impose manual penalty if unethical practices done. 

How Search Console tool helps?

  1. It checks performance, Defects of a website.
  2. Provide the required reports to make a website healthy.
  3. Keep our website ranking better in the search results.
Search Console reports include:
  • Crawl errors
  • Sitemap submission
  • Page Indexing
  • Robot text
  • Examine links
  • Penalty

Overall, Search Console is an important tool that must be used to increase our website visibility in search engine's that helps our business grow faster in this digital era. 

Sitemap Submission

Since there are billions of websites, Google will not index some webpages of a site. In that particular situation, Google provide a solution called sitemap submission.

  Sitemap is an XML file that lists all the webpages of a website to crawl or index by the Google. Once sitemap submission done, Google can easily crawl and index that page. Sitemap is in compressed format

Main points to note:
  • It is an XML document
  • Consists of all URL's of website
  • < 10 Mb
  • 50,000 URLs
  • Modified date and published date included
  • Change frequency recorded
There are two types of sitemaps

  • HTML sitemap - User can easily navigate through this method
  • XML sitemap-  Google can easily crawl and understand the webpages easily
Page Indexing - It index the page.

Robots text - It groups the folder for the crawling process.

Syntax: URL/robots.txt// - For main folder

Examine links: Search console examine the inbound (External links directing to the website) and outbound links(Internal Links directing website).

How to add a property in Search Console

Below are the initial verification process methods.

1. URL - Prefix Property: The URLs that match the specified prefix, including the protocol(https), are the one's considered. In this method, sub domain will be auto verified. For example : https://example.com/, then all the URL's coming follows the property https://example.com/eg1, https://example.com/eg2

2. Domain level property: This property covers all the URLs and subdomains with the specified domain. Here, DNS record access also needed.  

Search Console verification methods:

  • HTML file upload - In this method, Google will provide us a file. We have to download that file and upload in the root directory of website. After that we have to click on verify. It will get verified. This is the most recommended method by Google.
  • HTML meta tag - In this method, copy the google meta tag code provided and paste it to the head part of the source code.
  • Google Analytics tracking - It is a free tool. After Google analytics set up done on our website,  we can use this method for ownership. We can also track website visits, interactions, traffic. Overall, we will get the information on website performance.                             
  • Google tag Manager - In this method, we have to copy and paste the Google tag code in the head section and body tag code in the body section.
            Google Tag Manager also gives insights into :
    • Conversion Tracking
    • Remarketing
    • Visitor Analytics report
  • Domain name provider - Copy the TXT record given by the search console to the DNS data entry section. Verification is completed.
